Valbona valley: the practical guide
Where the valley starts and ends, the walks worth doing, and how to handle the pass to Theth.
The shape of the valley
Valbona runs roughly 25 km from Bajram Curri up to the road head at Rrogam. The river bed is enormously wide and mostly dry gravel in late summer, which surprises people. Guesthouses cluster around Valbonë village and Rrogam.
Getting there
From the Komani ferry at Fierza it is about 90 minutes by minibus. Minibuses meet the ferry; if you are on a booked trip, your transfer will be waiting.
Walks from the valley
The easy day is the walk up the river bed to Rrogam and the café at the road end — flat, about 12 km return. The hard day is the pass to Theth. In between, the trail to the Rosi mountain viewpoint gives you the ridgeline without the full crossing.
The pass to Theth
17 km, 1,000 m of ascent to Qafa e Valbonës at 1,795 m, then a long descent. Six to eight hours. Start by seven in summer, carry two litres of water, and check the forecast — the pass is exposed and afternoon storms are common in July and August.
Where to stay
Half board guesthouses at €35–60 per person. Rrogam is quieter and closer to the trailhead; Valbonë village has more choice and the only shops.
One thing people get wrong
Assuming they can buy lunch on the pass. There is a seasonal café roughly two thirds of the way up on the Valbona side and nothing else until Theth. Carry your own food.
