Overview

Komani Lake is a drowned canyon — the Drin river backed up behind a dam until it filled a gorge so narrow that the ferry passes between rock walls with metres to spare. This is the day tour that shows you the whole of it, then drops you at the Shala River, where meltwater runs clear enough to read a coin at two metres.

Operated by Wild Tour Albania · licensed guides, insured boats

Highlights

  • The full two-hour ferry transit through the narrowest section of the Komani gorge
  • Two hours of free time at the Shala River — swim, kayak, or do nothing at all
  • A licensed Wild Tour Albania guide on board, in English, for the whole day
  • Small-boat transfer to Shala so you skip the queue at the main pier
  • Lunch stop at a family-run restaurant on the riverbank (paid locally, around €10)

Itinerary

  1. 07:30

    Meet at Koman pier

Check in at the Wild Tour Albania desk by the ferry ramp. Your guide hands out tickets, life jackets and a dry bag if you need one.

  2. 08:00

    Ferry into the gorge

The boat threads the narrowest part of the canyon in the first forty minutes — sit on the open upper deck, this is the section everyone photographs.

  3. 10:00

    Fierza and transfer

Change to a smaller boat that can enter the Shala arm. The water turns from deep green to a pale turquoise as you go.

  4. 10:45

    Shala River

Arrive at Ranxa beach. Swim, hire a kayak, walk the shoreline path upstream to the quieter pools, or take the short trail to the viewpoint.

  5. 12:30

    Lunch on the riverbank

Trout, byrek, seasonal vegetables and homemade rakia at a family restaurant. Vegetarian plates available — tell us when you book.

  6. 13:30

    Return to Koman

The same route in reverse, with the light coming from the other side. Back at the pier around 14:30.

4 out of 5 The day tour does what it says. The gorge is spectacular and the ferry is comfortable. Shala gets busy around midday, so take the guide's advice and walk ten minutes upstream.

5 out of 5 Third time in Albania and the first time I have booked online rather than negotiating at a pier. Same local operator, same price, but with a confirmation email and someone answering the phone.

Frequently asked

Yes — the lower deck is fully covered and the upper deck has a partial canopy. Bring a hat anyway; the reflection off the water is strong.

Yes, and you should. The water sits around 12–15 °C in summer, so it is a bracing but short swim. There are changing tents at Ranxa beach.

The lake is enclosed and almost always flat. In four seasons of running this trip we have had a handful of cases, all in strong afternoon wind.
